What is Zac Taylor getting with his former colleague coordinating his defense?ESTShareTweetShareShareBengals coaching profile: Lou AnarumoJim Dedmon-USA TODAY SportsAfter what felt like an eternity, the Cincinnati Bengals have finally hired a defensive coordinator. New York Giants defensive backs coach Lou Anarumo has agreed to terms to lead the Bengals’ defense going forward. Anarumo becomes the third defensive coordinator the Bengals have hired since Mike Zimmer left the organization following the 2013 season. Before coaching last season in New York, Anarumo spent six seasons coaching the defensive backs for the Miami Dolphins, while also becoming the interim defensive coordinator in the middle of the 2015 season — just seven weeks before Zac Taylor became the interim offensive coordinator.Taylor and Anarumo coached together for four years in Miami. When Taylor wasn’t brought back for the 2016 season and left for the University of Cincinnati, Anarumo returned to hisformer position full-time with Vance Joseph hired as the new defensive coordinator. Daronte Jones, the Bengals cornerbacks coach, was hired by the Dolphins that same offseason as the assistant defensive backs coach to Anarumo. Each coach lasted through the 2017 season before Jones ended up in Cincinnati and Anarumo in New York. Before entering the NFL coaching ranks, Anarumo established himself as an experienced defensive backs coach with multiple college programs, including an eight-year stint with a power five school that lead to his leap into the next level.R茅sum茅1989: Wagner (part-time RB Coach)1990-1991: Syracuse (Graduate Assistant)1992-1994: Merchant Marine Academy (Defensive Coordinator/DB Coach)1995-2000: Harvard (Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator/DB Coach)2001-2002: Marshall (DB Coach)2003: Marshall (Special Teams Coordinator/DB Coach)2004-2011: Purdue (DB Coach)2012-2014: Miami Dolphins (DB Coach)2015: Miami Dolphins (Interim Defensive Coordinator/DB Coach)2016-2017: Miami Dolphins (DB Coach)2018: New York Giants (DB Coach)A graduate of Staten Island’s Wagner College, Anaromu began his 30-year coaching career in two opposite locations around Manhattan. He was the part-time running backs coach for both Wagner and then the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1990. He took a graduate assistant gig with Syracuse in upstate New York before coming back down to Long Island, where he became the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for the Merchant Marine Academy for three years.Anarumo would coordinate a defense again until those 12 weeks with the Dolphins in 2015. After his stint with the Marine Academy, he went to coach at Harvard where he had three titles, including his first opportunity as a special teams coordinator. From Harvard Boomer Esiason Jersey , he spent three years with Marshall as their special teams coordinator in his first year and defensive backs coach for all three years. In 2004, he was hired by Purdue to be their defensive backs coach and stuck with the program all the way through the 2011 season. Purdue ended having two defensive backs that played under Anarumo turn into drafted prospects: Bernard Pollard and Ricardo Allen. Now entering his eighth year in the NFL, Anarumo will get the chance to build a defense for the first time in 25 years. He has veteran star power up front in Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap (along with Carl Lawson and Sam Hubbard) and promising young talent in the secondary in William Jackson and Jessie Bates III. Yet, this is still the unit that finished second-to-last in weighted DVOA and expected points. This will be a tall order for a first-time coordinator. How Anarumo decides to build around these pieces — specifically at linebacker — will determine how effective his first year as defensive coordinator will end up being. Despite their magnificent3-0 start to the season, the Eagles’ lack of depth and talent caught up with them as the season progressed. Carson Wentz had no weapons to throw to, the running game was inconsistent at best and the secondary lacked in coverage. There are several important areas that the Eagles need to address during the offseason to make them a relevant football team again.Next: Wide receiverOct 9, 2016; Detroit, MI, USA; Detroit Lions linebacker Tahir Whitehead (59) breaks up a pass intended for Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Nelson Agholor (17) during the fourth quarter at Ford Field. Lions win 24-23. Mandatory Credit: Raj Mehta-USA TODAY SportsWide receiverIn 2016 Jordan Evans Jersey White , the Eagles’ two best receivers were Jordan Matthews and Nelson Agholor (very bad at football). Against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 11, Agholor singlehandedly cost the Eagles 14 points after a pair of shockingly dreadful gaffes. Despite his horrible play, Agholor still led all Eagles receivers with 883 snaps on the season. For the Eagles to get the best out of their new franchise quarterback, the team will have to find receivers capable of getting open and making plays. That currently does not exist in the Eagles’ receiving corps. Fortunately, the Eagles will have severalopportunities to bring in more talented receivers through free agency and the 2017 NFL Draft. It seems very possible that DeSean Jackson could come back to Philadelphia this offseason. If that happens, the Eagles will already be miles ahead of where they were in 2016.Next: CornerbackOct 23, 2016; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Nolan Carroll (22) on the field against the Minnesota Vikings at Lincoln Financial Field. The Philadelphia Eagles won 21-10. Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-USA TODAY SportsCornerbackPhiladelphia’s secondary wasn’t great in 2016. Despite outstanding play from safeties Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod, cornerbacks Leodis McKelvin and Nolan Carroll struggled to shut down opposing receivers, ultimately costing the Eagles valuable wins. Rookie Jalen Mills showed flashes of potential, however. Though ranked as the worst cornerback in the league by Pro Football Focus, Mills lined up across several of the game’s best receivers in Julio Jones Boomer Esiason Jersey White , Odell Beckham Jr. and Antonio Brown and, for the most part, was able to hold his own. Unfortunately, Mills’ questionable speed will likely prohibit from being a reliable outside cornerback.Several big-name corners will be hitting the free agent market this offseason including Stephon Gilmore, Prince Amukamara and Morris Claiborne. The Eagles will almost certainly be in the runningto land at least one of those corners in free agency.Next: Running backDec 4, 2016; Cincinnati, OH, USA; Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz (11) hands off to running back Wendell Smallwood (28) during the first half against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium. Mandatory Credit: David Kohl-USA TODAY SportsRunning backWith Ryan Mathews having possibly played his last snap in Philadelphia and Darren Sproles set to retire following the 2017 season, it’s time the Eagles start to replenish their group of running backs.Fifth round draft selection Wendell Smallwood quietly had a solid rookieseason despite his minimal workload. However, he is farfrom a finished product and the Eagles may opt to use one of their early round draft picks on a workhorse running back such as Leonard Fournette or D’Onta Foreman. It’s also possible the Kansas City Chiefs could release running back Jamaal Charles this offseason, but at 30 years old and still recovering from a devastating ACL tear, Charles’ days as a No. 1 running back seem to be coming to a close.Next: Offensive lineOct 23, 2016; Philadelphia Carlos Dunlap Jersey White , PA, USA; Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce (62) in a game against the Minnesota Vikings at Lincoln Financial Field. The Philadelphia Eagles won 21-10. Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-USA TODAY SportsOffensive linePhiladelphia’s offensive line struggled at times in 2016. Jason Peters led the NFL in false start penalties and center Jason Kelce looked like a shell of his former Pro Bowl self. Lane Johnson‘s 10-game suspension didn’t do the Eagles any favors either.Luckily, the Eagles have a solid foundation for the future of it’s offensive line. Rookie Isaac Seumalo showedphenomenal versatility in his first NFL season, taking snaps at left tackle, left guard, right guard and right tackle. Fellow first-year proHalapoulivaati Vaitai also showed flashes of potential despite a horrific debut against the Washington Redskins in Week 6.Even though the offensive line isn’t necessarily a direneed, it is certainly an area the Eagles should continue to stock with young talent duringthe offseason.Next: LinebackerDec 4, 2016; Cincinnati, OH, USA; Philadelphia Eagles outside linebacker Mychal Kendricks (95) against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium. The Bengals won 32-14. Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-USA TODAY SportsLinebackerThe Eagles have a couple of top-tier linebackers in Jordan Hicks and the underrated Nigel Bradham, but depth is a major area of concern. Mychal Kendricks only played 26.8 percent of the Eagles’ defensive snaps in 2016 andcontinues to look like the weak link in Philadelphia’s linebacker corps. Backups Stephen Tulloch and Najee Goode are both set to hit the free agent market in March and KamuGrugier-Hill is nothing more than a special teams contributor. The Eagles will definitely look to add a linebacker or two during the offseason.More from Inside the IgglesPhiladelphia Eagles make right decision by firing Greg Lewis59m agoFive free agents the Philadelphia Eagles should target3h agoPhiladelphia Eagles’ Brandon Graham Lands All-Pro selection3h agoThe Philadelphia Eagles Need A Playoff Hero On The Roster1 d agoEagles: 3 Things we should gather from Howie Roseman4d agoThis article originally appeared on
