CLEVELAND -- Indians manager Terry Francona likes to talk about grind-it-out wins. Tuesday nights 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox fit that category perfectly. Michael Bourns two-run double in the seventh inning snapped a 3-all tie and extended Clevelands winning streak to a season-high five straight games. The Indians scored three runs on five straight hits in the first off Jake Peavy, but couldnt add to the lead and the Red Sox tied the game in the seventh. The deadlock didnt last long. "We played a good game," Francona said. "I thought we had to. We strung together a number of hits (in the first), then youre kind of hanging on for dear life. When they tied it, we came back." Cleveland (29-30) can get back to .500 for the first time since April 24 if it can complete a three-game sweep Wednesday. The Indians have made up six games in the AL Central standings since May 18 and trail first-place Detroit by 4 1-2 games. Francona always stresses to his players to take things one day at a time. "Thats the only way you can dig yourself out of a hole," he said. "It can look so daunting when you look too far in advance, but when you take care of what youre supposed to do that day, all of a sudden things can mount in a good way." The Red Sox have lost two straight after winning seven consecutive games. That streak was preceded by a 10-game losing streak. Nick Hagadone (1-0) struck out three in 1 1-3 innings. Cody Allen recorded the final four outs for his fifth save, striking out former Indians All-Star Grady Sizemore, pinch-hitting for Jonny Gomes, to end the game. Allen also retired Sizemore for the final out in Mondays 3-2 win. "Obviously, they have some very good hitters," Allen said. "Theyre the defending world champions. Thats a veteran group. They have a lot of wins over there." Peavy (1-3) allowed five runs in 6 1-3 innings. The right-hander, who hasnt won since April 25, gave up three runs in the first, but held the Indians scoreless until the seventh. David Murphy walked to start the inning and Yan Gomes singled. Peavy threw out Murphy at third on Mike Aviles sacrifice attempt, leaving runners at first and second. Andrew Miller relieved, but Bourn doubled off the lefty over the head of Gomes in left field to score both runners. "Bournie had a really good at-bat," Francona said. "Thats not a fun lefty to face from the left side." Bourn, who hit a walk-off homer Sunday against Colorado, is 8 for 19 with five RBIs in Clevelands winning streak. The Indians are 20-11 at Progressive Field, the best home record in the AL. The Indians opened the game with five straight singles. Michael Brantley and Lonnie Chisenhall had RBI hits. The third run scored when Ryan Raburn hit into a double play. Peavy, who was 0-2 with a 5.89 ERA in six starts last month, retired 14 in a row at one point, a stretch that ended with Chisenhalls two-out single in the seventh. "This is a tough one to lose," Peavy said. "I dont know if Ive ever started a game with five straight hits. Tonight was a grind." Xander Bogaerts hit a solo homer with one out in the third. Jonathan Herreras sixth-inning single cut the lead to 3-2. Bogaerts started the seventh with a double off Scott Atchison and scored when Dustin Pedroia doubled. Hagadone, called up from Triple-A Columbus on Monday, struck out A.J. Pierzynski and Alex Hassan with two on to end the inning. Cleveland starter T.J. House allowed two runs in 5 2-3 innings. You can watch the game live starting at 4pm et/1pm pt on TSN1, TSN3, TSN4 and TSN5 or listen on TSN Radio 1050 Toronto starting at 3pm et/12pm pt. The Argos and the Alouettes will square off at Rogers Centre. Toronto, Montreal and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are tied atop the East Division with 6-8 records with each having four regular-season games remaining. The Argos would not only move two points ahead of the Als with a win but also clinch the season series, giving them a crucial tiebreaker if the two ended up tied. That could be a key advantage as Hamilton, Toronto and Montreal are likely chasing two playoff spots due to the crossover. The B.C. Lions (8-7) are fourth in the West Division but would secure the No. 3 Eastern seed if they finished with a better record than the third-place team in the East Division. We do know that probably only two teams are making it into the playoffs so you severely hurt your chances when you lose any of those four remaining games, Higgins said Friday. Never put a must on top of the start of a win. Were going to line up, were going to play, were going to play very well and were going to win the football game and not have to worry about whether it was a must or just a maybe win. Theres no shortage of intrigue and suspense heading into the final four weeks as all remaining games are inter-division affairs with only Ottawa having been eliminated from playoff contention. Toronto and Montreal meet again Nov. 2 at Molson Stadium. Toronto coach Scott Milanovich called last weekends thrilling 34-33 comeback win over Hamilton a must for his team but didnt put the same emphasis on Saturdays contest. If we win this game, it puts us in a much better position moving forward, he said. The reality was if we didnt beat Hamilton last week we were basically going to be out of the first-place hunt so I wasnt going to hide that from our guys. The Argos and Alouettes have both been on a nice roll of late. Toronto has won three straight while Montreal is 5-1 with starter Jonathan Crompton. But Crompton hasnt been spectacular. Hes completed 58.9 per cent of his passes for 1,512 yards with seven TDs and seven interceptions. Crompton hasnt thrown for over 300 yards in a game and has just one road win, a 15-7 decision over Ottawa on Sept. 26. Everyones looking at stats, Higgins said. The only one we care about is hes won five and lost one as a starting quarterback. Milanovich praised Crompton for utilizing such offensive playmakers as receivers Duron Carter (54 catches, 712 yards, five TDs) and S.J. Green (38 receptions, 518 yards, two touchdowns). I get the quarterback point .dddddddddddd . . but I think hes playing well, he said. Hes trusting his receivers, which is exactly what Id do if I was him. When you have a defence like theirs and playmakers like they do and returners on special teams, anything can happen. Cromptons status as Montreals starter was further solidified Thursday after the club released former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith. But Higgins said that hasnt put more pressure on Cromptons shoulders. Quite the opposite, he said. I think theres pressure thats been alleviated because there was this pressure that there was an elephant in the room. Theres no doubt starter Ricky Ray has carried the Argos this season. The 34-year-old Californian leads the CFL in passing yards (3,861), touchdowns (27) and completion percentage (68.6) and has Toronto ranked first in total yards (361.6) and passing yards (287.2) per game and third in scoring (26.8 points). Thats hardly news to Higgins. He was Edmontons head coach from 01 to 04 and watched an unheralded Ray crack the roster as a No. 3 quarterback in 02 before capping his first season as the starter in 03 as a Grey Cup champion. His mentality hasnt changed from the first time he stepped on to the football field in Edmonton, Higgins said. Hes just one of the elite quarterbacks in the CFL and anytime you have Ricky Ray as your quarterback you always have a chance. The key, Higgins said, is getting to Ray before he can set up and find his receivers downfield. Were going to see if we can get after him, Higgins said. We know that presents a challenge but were up to challenges. Its kind of the same approach Toronto will take against Crompton. With any quarterback I still think the most important thing is to take away his running game, and then you have to put pressure on him, Milanovich said. You have to take away his running game then knock him on the ground a few times. Toronto will make a number of roster changes for the game. Offensively, receivers Spencer Watt and Jason Barnes go on the injured list, replaced by LaVon Brazill and Maurice Mann. The secondary will feature Evan McCollough (from practice roster) at halfback, Vincent Agnew moving from linebacker to replace Branden Smith at one cornerback spot and Orhian Johnson (practice roster) starting at the other. Matt Ware assumes Agnews linebacker position. Im not as concerned as youd think, Milanovich said. All these guys have played and started quite a few games. Its not ideal, Im not going to lie to you but these arent rookies and to me thats a big deal. Special-teams player Daryl Townsend (calf) and receiver Chad Johnson (groin) wont play for Montreal. Johnson, a former All-Pro, has just seven catches for 151 yards and a TD in his first CFL season. This series has been very even, with the Sharks holding a 132-128 edge in unblocked shot attempts with the score close (within a goal for the first two periods, tied in the third/overtime). Thats close enough for goaltending to make the difference and, given the uncertainty in that respect with the Sharks, Jonathan Quick is more appealing. Even so, the Sharks do get home-ice advantage in their attempt to avoid being the fourth team in NHL history to lose a series in which they led three games to none. Records released by West Mesa Justice Court show McNabb served his time Wednesday and was released about 1:30 a.m. Thursday. McNabb, 37, was arrested Dec. 15 in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community east of Phoenix, according to court records. A copy of the citation shows McNabb was stopped on the Loop 101 freeway just after 3 a.m. and radar clocked his Range Rover at 81 mph in a 65-mph zone. He also was cited for DUI, but no information about blood-alcohol level was on the citation. McNabb pleaded guilty on March 27 and nine days of his sentence was suspended. Court documents show McNabb was ordered to pay a nearly $1,500 fine and enter an outpatient treatment program in Scottsdale from April 10 to July 8. The Maricopa County Sheriffs Officee released McNabbs mug shot Thursday morning, starting a media frenzy about his arrest, which hadnt been previously reported.dddddddddddd The agency later said in a statement that McNabb was booked into a detention facility on Wednesday by order of the West Mesa Justice Court and released after serving one day for a misdemeanour DUI charge. McNabbs Phoenix-based attorney Stephen Benedetto didnt immediately return a call Thursday seeking comment on the case. McNabb played 13 years in the NFL after being drafted with the second overall pick in 1999. He led the Philadelphia Eagles to four straight NFC championship games from 2001 to 2004 and one Super Bowl berth that ended in a 24-21 loss to the New England Patriots in 2005. McNabb played for the Washington Redskins in 2010 and Minnesota Vikings in 2011 before retiring. He currently co-hosts a sports talk radio show and has a home in the Phoenix area.
