MONTREAL - Opening with a pair of one-sided wins was a confidence booster for Canada but now comes the first real test at the World Junior Championship: Finland. Watch the game live tonight on TSN1 and TSN4 with coverage underway NOW. The game can also be seen on TSN GO and heard on the TSN Radio Network. Canada (2-0-0) enters Mondays game at the Bell Centre on a high after shutout wins over Slovakia and Germany, but the defending champion Finns (0-1-1) are a sharp step up in competition. Theyve yet to win a game, so theyre going to be coming at us, forward Curtis Lazar said Sunday. Itll probably be do or die for them. They really need to take a step in that direction, and we get the lucky draw of having to face them. Weve got to try to weather the storm. Theyve got a great team all around and we have to be ready to play. It has not gone well so far for Finland, which opened with a gutsy performance in a 2-1 shootout loss to the United States but then went south with a surprise 2-1 defeat to Slovakia after wasting a string of scoring chances. Many of the same Finnish players, including defence ace Julius Hinka, captain Artturi Lehkonen and goalie Juuse Saros, who will get the start in net, were riding high at last years event in Malmo, Sweden, when they toppled Canada 5-1 in the semifinals before beating the Swedes to claim their first title since 1998. They are sure to bring the same cautious, patience-testing game they always play to the rematch with Canada, which has seven players back from a year ago. Theyve got great goaltending too, added Lazar, one of the returnees. Were going to have to get some good traffic in front of their goalie. Their defence does a great job of moving the puck and theyve got some crafty forwards as well. So theyre going to keep us on our toes, but if we play the way we can, well be fine. Canada has more skill up front than last years squad. So far, the goaltending has been perfect and the defence has been solid but for some hairy moments in the second period of Saturdays 4-0 win when the entire team lost its edge for a spell against Germany. Zach Fucale, who needed to make only 12 saves in the opening 8-0 rout of Slovakia, will be back in goal after Eric Comrie picked up a 17-save shutout against the Germans. Fucale was in the net for last years loss to the Finns, who took the lead in the second period on a fluke goal by Joni Nikko after Honka shot the puck in along the boards and saw it take a funny hop in front of the vacated net. Finnish checking and counterattacking took over after that. The loss guaranteed that Canada would go a fifth straight year without a gold medal. I wouldnt say its fresh in my mind, but I remember what happened and I learned from it, said Fucale. Itll certainly serve as a motivator for the game. Coach Benoit Groulx, an assistant to Brent Sutter last year, doesnt want to dwell on what happened a year ago. He said both teams are different and this is a new tournament. The Finns no longer have star forward Teuvo Teravainen, who had three points in the semifinal. But they have slick forward Kaspari Kapanen, a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins who missed last years event with an injury. Finland also has six-foot-three dynamo Jesse Puljujarvi, who may be their most dangerous forward even if hes only 16. We want to play in the now, said Groulx. I know they have a good team, but we also have a good team. We expect a very good game. Canadas advantages will be playing at home on an NHL-size rink and having a team brimming with confidence after two big wins. Centre Nic Petan had six points in two games, while Robby Fabbri had four and Max Domi, Sam Reinhart, Connor McDavid and defenceman Madison Bowey each had three. Domi, an Arizona Coyotes prospect who is the son of former NHL enforcer Tie Domi, grew up getting advice not only from his father but from his dads friends, like superstars Mario Lemieux and Mats Sundin. I didnt really listen to my dad when he got mad at me for not shooting, Domi said with a laugh. Id always over-pass in minor hockey and hed get on me and say, If you cant listen to Mario or Mats Sundin, then I dont know who else can tell you. So Id say all right. I had to figure it out pretty quick. Groulx tinkered with his lines late against Germany by putting McDavid between Fabbri and Jake Virtanen, a Vancouver Canucks first-round pick from Abbotsford, B.C., who is of Finnish descent. The only Canadian forwards without a point so far are Nick Ritchie and Frederik Gauthier, an ace penalty killer who leads the tournament with an 84.21 faceoff win percentage. Canada has killed off nine straight penalties so far, but Groulx feels improvements can still be made. Our PKers were good but we can still be better, he said. We blocked many shots because we got in position to block shots. We still need improvement in our routes when we kill penalties, but I like the attitude of our PK guys. As for Finland, Groulx is aware they will be a test for his team. They skate well, they have skills, they have a solid goalie and they play very good as a unit, said Groulx. Theyre very good at blocking the middle of the ice and taking your time and space away, so itll be a matter of us of managing the puck well and making sure we put ourselves in position to use our speed. PRETORIA, South Africa -- Oscar Pistorius refused to look at a photo of his dead girlfriends bloody head wounds while testifying at his murder trial Wednesday as the prosecutor urged the star athlete to "take responsibility" for killing her. "Its time that you look at it," chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel said, setting the stage for a rigorous first day of cross-examination of Pistorius, the double-amputee Olympian charged with premeditated murder for shooting Reeva Steenkamp three times through a toilet door at his home. "I remember," Pistorius said of Steenkamps bloodied head, becoming distraught and then crying as he turned away from the gruesome image of the injuries he inflicted that were displayed next to him in a packed courtroom in South Africas capital. Nel said Steenkamps head "exploded" when it was struck by one of four hollow-point bullets that Pistorius fired through the door on Feb. 14, 2013 with his 9 mm pistol. The showing of the photograph on TV screens in the courtroom caused gasps among spectators, who included Steenkamps mother, June. The police photo showed a side view of the dead model and reality TV stars head, with a mass of blood and human tissue on the back and upper parts. Her eyes were closed. "I will not look at a picture where Im tormented by what I saw and felt that night," Pistorius said. "As I picked Reeva up, my fingers touched her head. I remember. I dont have to look at a picture, I was there." Pistorius, 27, says he shot Steenkamp in the pre-dawn hours on Valentines Day -- in the head, arm and hip -- by mistake thinking she was a dangerous intruder behind the door in his bathroom about to come out and attack him. Prosecutors charge he killed the 29-year-old intentionally, and Nel aggressively questioned Pistorius for the first time. "You killed her," Nel said. "You shot and killed her," and he asked Pistorius to say it. Pistorius would not, saying merely: "I did." Pistorius faces a possible prison term of 25 years to life if convicted of premeditated murder. Nel also showed a video, first broadcast by Sky News days before the trial started, of the celebrated athlete firing a gun at a watermelon at a shooting range. On the video, Pistorius can be heard saying the melon was "softer than brains" after it explodes when the bullet hits it, and calling the powerful .50-calibre handgun he was using a "zombie stopper." Referring to tthe watermelon, Nel said to Pistorius: "You know the same happened to Reevas head.dddddddddddd It exploded." Defence lawyer Barry Roux objected to the gun video being shown, saying it was inadmissible character evidence and amounted to a legal "ambush" of the defence. After the dramatic start, prosecutor Nel also started to poke holes in details of Pistorius version of the events of the fatal night. The champion runner said that his claim in a court document a year ago that he went out onto a balcony at his home before the shooting was incorrect. Pistorius said he went to the edge of the balcony but not outside. The discrepancy could be significant because Pistorius says he heard a noise in the bathroom that alerted him to a possible intruder, which would have been harder if he was out on the balcony. Nel tried to pin down Pistorius on whether he meant to fire into the toilet cubicle door at a perceived intruder, or whether his gun discharged accidentally. Pistorius said he didnt intend to shoot "anyone" and that he fired "before thinking" because he thought his life was in danger, prompting Nel to accuse him of weighing the legal implications of the question before answering. The dogged prosecutor implied that Pistorius, who grew more agitated, was becoming emotional because he was faced with a difficult question. The judge noted that Pistorius had been emotional throughout the trial. Pistorius told his questioner that he was trying to be careful with his answers because the stakes were high. "My life is on the line," he said. Nel retorted: "Reeva doesnt have a life anymore because of what youve done." And Nel tried to dismantle a sympathetic image of Pistorius that the defence had sought to build up in three days of testimony, asking the athlete to explicitly acknowledge that he killed Steenkamp. "I made a mistake," Pistorius said. "What was your mistake?" Nel shot back. Pistorius then said he "took Reevas life." Nel also questioned the defences portrayal of Pistorius as a good role model. The prosecution depicts him as an angry hothead with a gun obsession. The prosecutor asked Pistorius if people looked up to him as a sporting hero, if he would hide anything and if he lived by Christian principles. "Im here to tell the truth, Im here to tell the truth as much as I can remember," Pistorius said. He also said: "Im human. I have sins."
