Then pyrotechnics fired around the arena while the starters sneaked under a giant white sheet hanging from the scoreboard above centre court. And when the curtain finally lifted on the 2013-14 Golden State Warriors, the real fireworks began. David Lee added 25 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Stephen Curry had 10 points and six assists as the Warriors trounced a rebuilding Lakers team playing without Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash. Golden State led by 19 at the half, 33 at the end of the third quarter and 35 early in the fourth. "I thought it was a thing of beauty from beginning to end," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. Jodie Meeks scored 14 points and Pau Gasol had 12 points and seven rebounds for an overmatched Los Angeles team playing on back-to-back nights. On one play in the third quarter, Iguodala stole the ball and whirled a behind-the-back pass on a fast break to Lee, who touched it back to Iguodala for a layup that brought the announced sellout crowd of 19,596 roaring to its feet. Iguodala finished with seven points, four rebounds and four assists. "It was fun to watch," Curry said. Far fewer Lakers fans than usual showed up at Oracle Arena. And the ones who did were easily drowned out by the home fans expecting big things in the basketball-united Bay Area, where the Warriors are the only NBA team. Not much is expected of the Lakers, who surprised some with their season-opening win over the Clippers behind 76 points from their reserves. Los Angeles bench scored 52 against the Warriors. DAntoni is using a bigger rotation after the Lakers lost Dwight Howard and Metta World Peace in the off-season. Bryant also hasnt returned to practice this fall since tearing his left Achilles tendon against the Warriors late last season and Nash was given the game off to rest with the Lakers playing on back-to-back nights. A day later than expected, their absences finally showed. The Warriors outshot the Lakers 53.5 to 39.3 per cent, outrebounded them 48 to 39 and looked far more talented and together than their neighbours to the south. "Growing pains. We have a lot of young guys on this team, myself included. Theyre going to happen," Meeks said. And for a change, Golden State also had the brightest star. Thompson scored 16 points and made all four of his 3-pointers to help the Warriors take a 26-16 lead after the first quarter. He had 27 points at halftime. This time, in the final game of a four-game series, Jarvis gave up only five hits as the Goldeyes beat the Saints 3-0 to win their third straight game in St. Paul and win the four-game series 3-1. After losing 14-1 in the series opener, the Goldeyes pitchers went lights out on St. Paul. Chris Salamida, Matt Rusch and Jarvis pitched 27 consecutive innings of shutout baseball. Its the first time the Goldeyes have ever gone back-to-back-to-back with complete game shutouts, or even three consecutive shutouts for that matter. “Our pitchers came out and threw strikes in the last two games and Jarvis just kept it going,” said Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea. “He pitched his butt off tonight. “No matter what level youre playing at, you dont see three complete game shutouts in a row. Thats something that just doesnt happen. Ill wager thats the first time its happened in league history. Its been amazing to watch.” With the victory, the Goldeyes improved to 49-41 on the season and pulled to within a game-and-a-half of the 50-39 Gary SouthShore RailCats. Gary lost 5-4 to Wichita Thursday afternoon. The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the second inning, as Ray Sadler walked, went to second on a single by Josh Mazzola and scored on a single by Luis Alen. Winnipeg made it 3-0 in the fourth on solo homers by Mazzola and Alen and that was it. Jarvis annd St.dddddddddddd Pauls Anthony Claggett were almost perfect for the rest of the game as both starters pitched complete games. “You cant pitch better than Jason has in his first two starts for us,” said Vermilyea, referring to the fact that Jarvis was acquired by the Goldeyes from Sioux City 10 days ago. “He works off that fastball and when he gets ahead he threw the slider and sinker ball and kept it in the bottom half of the zone. And you dont throw a shutout without a defense making plays behind him and our defense was great tonight.” Mazzola and Alen had outstanding games for the Goldeyes. Mazzola, went four-for-four, hit his 14th homer of the season, scored a run, drove in a run and raised his batting average to .294. Alen went two-for-four with a solo homer and an RBI single. The Goldeyes had only eight hits on the night, but they made only one error in the entire four-game series. Jarvis (6-10, 3.85 ERA) picked up the win, his first as a member of the Goldeyes. Claggett (8-5, 3.26 ERA) suffered the loss for St. Paul. Right after the game, the Goldeyes jumped on the bus and headed for Sioux Falls, S.D. where theyll open a three-game weekend series against the Sioux Falls Canaries on Friday night.
