The Maple Leafs general manager joined TSN 1050 on Friday to discuss the re-tooling of the teams front office and coaching staff, along with moves made to bolster the Leafs forward and defensive depth. “Were looking at how the bottom six shakes out,” Nonis said of the Leafs options up front. “We probably have nine players for six spots.” Nonis believes the signings of the likes of Petri Kontiola and Mike Santorelli should help the team down the middle, while David Booth and Daniel Winnik should provide Randy Carlyle more flexibility with his bottom two lines. “Playing players that deserve to play, regardless of their contractual status, regardless of how much time theyve played in the league,” Nonis said of what fans can expect of how ice time will be divided among the clubs forward group. “Well approach things a lot differently.” Nonis acknowledged that the league is trending towards more evenly distributing minutes, and that his head coach was hamstrung last season with the bottoom-six forwards that were made available.dddddddddddd “If you give them those tools where they can play the fourth line, then Id expect hed do that,” Nonis said. Besides the competition up front, Nonis said there could be a push from the likes of Petter Granberg, Stuart Percy and Andrew MacWilliam for spots on a revamped back-end. In regards to the teams fornt office makeover, Nonis says hes encouraged by what the additions of Brendan Shanahan and Kyle Dubas will bring to the Leafs front office. “We kind of think the same way in how the team should be put together,” Nonis said of Shanahan. “We agreed for the most part in the direction the team was going,” What impressed Nonis about Dubas was that the 28-year-old was the first person to show the GM “how analytics could be developed." “Hes a hockey guy that understands the analytical side of it,” Nonis said, while again dismissing the notion that the team had previously ignored the increasing role advanced stats are playing in the game. "Theres this notion we had an aversion to analytics, which isnt true.” Nonis said. “Weve used them, weve had them.” Nonis on battle for camp spots, front office changes ' ' '
